How to Measure Wall Paint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Measuring the correct quantity of paint for your walls is essential to avoid both overbuying and underbuying. Here's a straightforward guide to help you determine how much paint you need for your project.

Step 1: Calculate the Wall Surface Area

Start by measuring the height and width of each wall you plan to paint. Multiply the height by the width to determine the square footage of each wall. Add together the square footage of all walls to get the total surface area.

Example: A wall 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide would have a surface area of 120 square feet. Repeat this calculation for all walls.

Step 2: Subtract Areas You Won’t Paint

Deduct the areas of windows, doors, or other unpainted sections from the total wall surface area. Measure their height and width, then calculate the square footage of each. Subtract these from your total surface area.

Step 3: Check Paint Coverage

Most paint cans indicate the approximate coverage per gallon, typically around 350-400 square feet. Divide your total surface area by the coverage specified on the paint can. This gives you the number of gallons you'll need.

Step 4: Consider Multiple Coats

If your project requires multiple coats, multiply the paint quantity by the desired number of coats for accurate measurement.

Pro Tip: Always buy a little extra paint (about 10% more) to account for touch-ups or future repairs.
