How to Make Horchata
Horchata is a traditional Mexican beverage made from rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. This refreshing drink is perfect for warm days and can easily be made at home. Here’s a simple recipe to prepare your own horchata.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of long-grain white rice
- 5 cups of water
- 1 cup of milk (you can use almond or coconut milk for a dairy-free version)
- 1/2 cup of sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Ice, for serving
Instructions
- Rinse the Rice: Start by rinsing the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
- Soak the Rice: In a bowl, combine the rinsed rice and 2 cups of water. Let it soak for at least 3 hours or overnight for best results.
- Blend the Mixture: After soaking, transfer the rice and soaking water to a blender. Add the remaining 3 cups of water, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Blend until smooth.
- Strain the Mixture: Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the liquid into a pitcher, discarding the solids.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the horchata for a few hours. Serve over ice and enjoy!
This homemade horchata is a delightful treat that you can customize to your taste. Feel free to adjust the sweetness or add more cinnamon for extra flavor. Enjoy your refreshing drink!
