How to Make a Sourdough Starter

Creating a sourdough starter is an essential step for baking delicious sourdough bread. Follow these simple steps to make your own starter at home.

Ingredients

  • Flour (whole wheat or all-purpose)
  • Water (filtered or dechlorinated)

Instructions

  1. In a clean glass jar, combine 100 grams of flour and 100 grams of water. Mix well until there are no dry lumps.
  2. Cover the jar loosely with a lid or a cloth to allow airflow and let it sit at room temperature (around 70°F to 75°F) for 24 hours.
  3. After 24 hours, check for bubbles. If you see some, it’s a good sign! Discard half of the mixture and feed it with another 100 grams of flour and 100 grams of water.
  4. Repeat this feeding process every 24 hours for about 5 to 7 days. Your starter should become bubbly and double in size after each feeding.
  5. Once your starter is active and has a pleasant, tangy smell, it’s ready to use for baking!

Tips for Success

  • Use a kitchen scale for accurate measurements.
  • Keep your starter in a warm spot, away from drafts.
  • If you want to slow down fermentation, you can refrigerate your starter and feed it once a week.

Now that you know how to make a sourdough starter, you can enjoy baking fresh sourdough bread at home!
