How to Flush Your Water Heater
Flushing your water heater is an essential maintenance task that helps to remove sediment buildup and improve efficiency. Follow these step-by-step instructions to effectively flush your water heater:
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before you begin, gather the necessary tools: a garden hose, a bucket, and a screwdriver. Ensure you have a towel and safety goggles for protection.
Step 2: Turn Off the Power and Water Supply
For electric water heaters, turn off the power at the circuit breaker. For gas heaters, set the thermostat to the pilot setting. Next, shut off the cold water supply valve located at the top of the heater.
Step 3: Connect the Garden Hose
Attach the garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater. Place the other end of the hose in a bucket or outside to direct the water.
Step 4: Open the Drain Valve
Open the drain valve slowly to allow the water to flow out. Be cautious as the water may be hot. Open a hot water faucet in your home to help with drainage.
Step 5: Flush the Tank
Once the tank is empty, briefly turn on the cold water supply to stir up any remaining sediment. Let it run for a few minutes, then close the drain valve.
Step 6: Refill and Restart
Remove the garden hose, close the drain valve, and turn on the cold water supply. Once the tank is full, restore power to the heater.
