How to Cook Beets
Beets are a nutritious and versatile vegetable that can be cooked in various ways to suit your taste. This guide will show you how to cook beets by boiling, roasting, and steaming so you can enjoy their natural sweetness and earthy flavor.
Boiling Beets
1. Rinse the beets well under running water and trim the leaves, leaving about an inch of stem to prevent bleeding. Do not peel the beets at this stage, as the skin will slip off easily after they’re cooked.
2. Place the beets in a large pot and cover them with water. Add a pinch of salt.
3. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and let the beets simmer for 30–45 minutes, depending on their size. Test for doneness by inserting a fork it should glide easily through the beet.
4. Once cooked, drain the beets and allow them to cool slightly before peeling off the skins.
Roasting Beets
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Wash and trim the beets, then wrap each individual beet in aluminum foil. This retains moisture and enhances their natural flavor.
3. Place the wrapped beets on a baking sheet and roast for 45–60 minutes, depending on their size. Larger beets may need more time.
4. Let them cool before peeling by rubbing the skins gently with a paper towel.
Steaming Beets
1. Prepare the beets by washing and trimming the leaves.
2. Place them in a steam basket over boiling water.
3. Cover with a lid and steam for 30–40 minutes until fork-tender.
4. Remove from heat, let cool, and peel off the skins with your hands or a paper towel.
