How Many Godzilla Movies Are There?

The Godzilla franchise, developed by Toho Studios in Japan, is one of the most iconic and long-running film franchises in cinematic history. As of today, there are 38 official Godzilla movies. These films span across different eras, timelines, and even production studios.

The Evolution of Godzilla Films

Godzilla made its grand debut in 1954 with the classic movie Gojira, directed by Ishirō Honda. This film introduced the iconic kaiju and set the tone for decades of monster films. The franchise is divided into four distinct eras:

  • Showa Era (1954–1975): This includes the first wave of Godzilla films, featuring 15 movies.
  • Heisei Era (1984–1995): Introducing a darker and more serious tone, this era includes 7 films.
  • Millennium Era (1999–2004): Featuring standalone reboots, this era consists of 6 movies.
  • Reiwa Era/Modern era (2016–present): Productions such as Shin Godzilla and the MonsterVerse collaboration (by Legendary Pictures) have contributed to its modern rebirth.

In addition to these, there are also Hollywood adaptations. The MonsterVerse, launched by Legendary Pictures, has introduced globally successful Godzilla movies like Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).
