How Tectonic Plates Define Continents

Tectonic plates play a fundamental role in defining the continents by shaping the Earth's surface. These plates, which are massive sections of the lithosphere, float on top of the semi-fluid layer called the asthenosphere. Their movements over millions of years have resulted in the creation, deformation, and repositioning of the continents we see today.

Continental drift, a concept initially proposed by Alfred Wegener, illustrates this phenomenon. Over geological time, continents drift apart or collide as plates move, forming supercontinents like Pangaea and dispersing afterward. These movements are powered by the Earth's internal heat, driving mantle convection.
